Moldova’s 400 kV Power Line Nears Commissioning
The 400 kV Vulcănești–Chișinău power line has entered final testing following the reinstallation of a transformer repaired in Spain. The 157-km line is nearing commissioning, although an official operating date remains unconfirmed.
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan recently inspected the Chișinău substation, where the repaired transformer has been installed and tested. The equipment connects the facility to the 330 kV network, with final system testing underway.
Financed by the World Bank, the line connects the 400 kV Vulcănești substation with the 330 kV Chișinău substation. It has a transmission capacity of up to 630 MVA and is expected to carry more than 50% of Moldova's electricity consumption during peak periods.
The project will enable electricity imports from Romania without transiting the Cuciurgan energy hub in Transnistria, strengthening Moldova's supply security.
The repairs highlight the importance of transformer testing and commissioning and electrical insulation reliability in transmission infrastructure.
