Two 400 kV transformers energized at Hams Hall BESS
Two 400 kV, 220 MVA supergrid transformers have been energized at the Hams Hall battery energy storage system (BESS) in the UK, connecting the facility's electrical infrastructure to the National Grid transmission network.
The energization was completed on September 30, 2026, ahead of the facility’s planned operation later this year.
The 350 MW/1.22 GWh project is being delivered by Wills Bros as engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for BW ESS, with Energy-IO responsible for the main electrical work.
Construction began in October 2024, with transformer energization following nearly two years of engineering and installation.
According to Wills Bros, Hams Hall will rank among Europe’s largest operational BESS facilities by storage capacity.
Once fully commissioned, the facility is expected to provide grid-scale energy storage to support electricity system flexibility.
