50Hertz starts 380 kV grid upgrade in Germany
50Hertz has started construction on a 380 kV expansion of its Wustermark substation in Germany to accommodate a 300 MW grid connection for the VIRTUS data center.
The project includes two new 380 kV switchgear bays, an additional spare bay, a second 380 kV bus coupler, and upgrades to protection and control systems.
The expansion will provide an N-1 secure connection to the extra-high-voltage network for the data center, supporting reliable electricity supply.
Wustermark connects to the Berlin 380 kV Northern Ring, linking it with the Neuenhagen substation and supporting electricity supply across the region.
“The Berlin-Brandenburg region is increasingly developing into an important location for digital infrastructure,” said Dirk Biermann, Chief Operations Officer of 50Hertz.
Scheduled for completion in 2028, the expansion will increase transmission capacity, accommodate growing industrial and digital electricity demand, and support renewable energy integration.
