RWE to pilot Heron Power solid-state transformer in Texas
Heron Power has signed a pilot agreement with RWE Americas to deploy its Heron Link solid-state, transformer-based power conversion system at a Texas battery storage facility.
Heron Link will replace low-voltage inverters and 60 Hz transformers at RWE’s battery storage facility co-located with the Pyron Wind Farm in Scurry County. Installation is targeted for April 2027.
The modular 5 MW medium-voltage inverter converts DC directly to medium-voltage AC. Heron reports 98.6% DC-to-MV efficiency, 99.5% lifetime availability and native grid-forming controls.
“This is the first utility-scale pilot agreement we have signed for Heron Link,” said Drew Baglino, CEO and founder of Heron Power.
The agreement provides a path for RWE to reserve at least 500 MW annually of additional U.S. manufacturing capacity, subject to definitive purchase agreements.
The pilot will evaluate the technology for potential use in future solar and battery storage projects, with the parties intending to pursue a supply agreement.
