Hitachi Energy Builds $330M Transformer Insulation Plant

19 Oct 2026
Hitachi Energy will invest over $330 million (CAD 479 million) in a transformer insulation factory in London, Ontario, to expand North American supply of critical manufacturing materials.

Scheduled for completion in 2028, the 21,000-square-meter facility will produce electrical insulation pressboard and laminates used in power transformers. It will house Canada's first pressboard manufacturing line and Hitachi Energy's first in the Americas, creating more than 100 permanent skilled jobs.

Public support includes approximately $14.1 million (CAD 20 million) from Canada's Strategic Response Fund, up to $14.1 million (CAD 20 million) from Ontario's Invest Ontario Fund, and $7.1 million (CAD 10 million) from Natural Resources Canada.

Helmut Bockshammer, Hitachi Energy's Global Product Group Manager for Insulation & Components, said the investment would “help address one of the most critical bottlenecks in transformer manufacturing.”

The project forms part of Hitachi Energy's planned $2 billion-plus North American supply-chain investments through 2027, alongside its Varennes transformer expansion and Canduct acquisition.
