Enphase Demonstrates 13.8 kV Solid-State Transformer
United States – Enphase Energy has demonstrated its IQ solid-state transformer (SST) converting 13.8 kV AC to 800 VDC at its research facility in Austin, Texas.
The test involved 132 power modules, with 44 connected in series on each of three phases. The system maintained stable output during simulated AI data center load fluctuations.
Each 5.5 kW module incorporates gallium nitride (GaN) switches, a Kestrel ASIC and a high-frequency transformer.
Hans van Antwerpen, Enphase’s chief technology officer, said: “All 132 modules shared the voltage evenly, and the 800 V output held steady through every load step.”
The solid-state transformer architecture is designed to convert medium-voltage AC directly to DC, reducing conversion stages in conventional data center power systems amid rising electricity demand.
Enphase plans further testing at 34.5 kV and megawatt-scale demonstrations before year-end, with customer pilots planned for 2027.
