Austin Utilities Commissions $5M Murphy Creek Substation
United States – Austin Utilities has commissioned the nearly $5 million Murphy Creek Substation in Austin, Minnesota, following the energization of its substation transformer in August 2026.
The project represents the utility's first new distribution substation investment in 30 years, aiming to improve transformer reliability, strengthen electric service and accommodate future load growth.
Three new distribution feeders, scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, will strengthen service to northwest Austin's business district and provide additional capacity for Creekside Industrial Park.
The expansion uses an existing facility developed by Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency in 2013. Design began in 2022, with construction starting in 2024.
The substation is also designed to improve voltage conditions across the distribution network and provide additional support during outages.
Utility Operations Director Alex Bumgardner said the project would improve everyday power quality and strengthen resilience during storms and other disruptions.
