Manitoba Hydro to Upgrade 42 Substations in Canada
Manitoba Hydro plans to invest up to $851 million (CAD 1.2 billion) in substation upgrades across Winnipeg and Brandon, Canada, over the next 15–20 years.
The grid modernization program covers 41 substations in Winnipeg and one in Brandon, replacing aging transformers, power lines, poles and electrical equipment to improve distribution reliability.
At Notre Dame substation, equipment dating to 1964 will be decommissioned, with service transferred to McPhillips substation. The three-year project includes approximately 200 transformer replacements, 600 poles, 25 km of overhead lines and up to 1.5 km of underground cable.
Hal Turner, Manitoba Hydro's Interim President and CEO, said the upgrades would reduce outage risks and improve reliability.
Additional projects are underway at Berry, Cavalier and Dawson substations. The utility expects the program to strengthen grid resilience, reduce maintenance costs and support future electricity demand while limiting construction disruptions.
