Solid-state transformer and flow battery to power US AI data center
TerraFlow Energy and DG Matrix have signed an agreement to deploy an integrated vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) and solid-state transformer (SST) system to power a live high-performance computing cluster in the United States.
The project will combine TerraFlow’s LDUPS long-duration uninterruptible power system with DG Matrix’s Interport solid-state transformer and Dell PowerEdge servers.
The architecture will manage power between the grid, on-site generation, storage and computing loads. TerraFlow’s system is designed to buffer rapid changes in compute demand, while Interport provides programmable power conversion, routing and control.
“Solid-state transformers allow power to be controlled dynamically rather than simply moved from one voltage to another,” said Haroon Inam, CEO of DG Matrix.
The companies said the system is intended to limit the impact of rapid AI compute load fluctuations on upstream grid infrastructure. The agreement also establishes a framework for additional data center deployments.
