500 MW Transformer to Boost Port of Rotterdam Grid Capacity
The Port of Rotterdam is set to gain 500 MW of temporary grid capacity under plans by TenneT and Stedin to address congestion in the Europoort area.
The project involves installing a temporary 500 MW transformer, which could enable industrial expansion and decarbonisation projects while permanent grid infrastructure is developed. The transformer is expected to become operational by the end of 2028 at the earliest, subject to permits and required cable connections.
Long-term grid expansion is scheduled for completion after 2032. Until then, the Port of Rotterdam Authority and Deltalinqs said additional measures will be needed, including more efficient use of existing capacity, greater flexibility in electricity consumption and increased generation within the port.
The organisations will continue working with companies, grid operators and government authorities through the Energy & Industry Board HIC and New Energy Taskforce to address grid congestion.
