CenterPoint Energy Selected for $50 Million DOE Grid Grant
CenterPoint Energy has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for a $50 million award supporting advanced substation technology upgrades in Greater Houston.
Following final negotiations, the funding will support deployment of Siemens Energy transmission grid-stabilizing technology designed to respond rapidly to changes in electricity demand. The project is intended to strengthen grid reliability and resiliency while increasing capacity to meet current and future demand across the region.
"Our mission is to build the most resilient coastal grid in the nation for the 2.9 million customers we proudly serve in the Greater Houston area," said Jason Ryan, CenterPoint Energy’s Executive Vice President, Regulatory Services & Government Affairs.
The project is expected to strengthen performance during periods of high demand and create more than 500 local construction and installation jobs. The award was selected through DOE’s SPARK program, which supports modernization of existing electrical infrastructure and advanced transmission technologies.
The initiative will add advanced substation technology to CenterPoint’s ongoing grid modernization efforts.
