MGM and VanTran Open New Transformer Plant in Waco, Texas

23 May 2025
On May 22, 2025, MGM Transformers and VanTran Transformers announced the opening of a new transformer manufacturing facility located in Waco, Texas. The 430,000-square-foot plant combines production capabilities for both dry-type and liquid-filled transformers to address increasing demand from clean energy sectors, electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, data centers, and utility projects.

This facility is expected to create approximately 700 jobs over the next five years and increase domestic transformer production capacity to over $1 billion annually. The expansion follows MGM Transformers' acquisition of VanTran in 2024, aiming to enhance manufacturing scale and reduce lead times for mission-critical infrastructure.

The new plant will focus primarily on producing custom liquid-filled transformers, which play a vital role in renewable energy and utility-scale applications. This development is part of a broader trend of manufacturing investments in Texas, alongside other major projects such as TMEIC's new power electronics plant and Mission Solar Energy's solar cell expansion.

Executives emphasized the significance of this investment in strengthening the U.S. electric grid and reducing reliance on foreign transformer suppliers.
