Transelectrica Inaugurates New 400 kV Substation in Western Romania

Transelectrica has inaugurated a new 400 kV Reșița electrical substation in western Romania, following a combined investment of RON 175.9 million (excluding VAT) for the construction of new infrastructure and modernization of existing facilities.

The project includes a newly built 400 kV substation alongside upgrades to the existing 220/110 kV Reșița substation in Caraș-Severin County. The works were delivered by a consortium led by Siemens Energy SRL, together with Electrogrup SA, Retrasib SA, subcontractor Energotech, and Dacom Impex SRL.

According to Ștefăniță Munteanu, CEO of Transelectrica, the Reșița substation is a strategic node in the western Romania 400 kV “Banat Axis” transmission corridor, which connects Portile de Fier, Reșița, Timișoara, and Arad. He noted that ongoing investments in the region exceed RON 600 million and are aimed at strengthening grid stability and increasing electricity transmission and cross-border capacity with Serbia.

The substation is part of a broader modernization program for Romania’s western 400 kV transmission corridor, supported through the Modernisation Fund. The wider plan aims to expand the 400 kV network and improve integration with the European ENTSO-E system.

Transelectrica stated that the project increases connection capacity for both consumers and new electricity generation, while supporting regional energy security and infrastructure development.
