Ørsted Receives Final 272-Tonne Transformer for Hornsea 3
UK – Ørsted has confirmed the arrival of the ninth and final power transformer at the Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm’s onshore converter station in Swardeston, Norfolk, completing a major equipment delivery milestone.
The transformers, described by Ørsted as ABB units supplied by Hitachi Energy, weigh up to 272 tonnes each. Specialist transport company Allelys moved the units from the Port of King’s Lynn, with police escorts accompanying the oversized loads. The operation highlights the challenges of moving heavy electrical equipment.
The transformers will support the connection of the 2.9 GW offshore wind farm to the UK’s National Grid. Once operational, Hornsea 3 is expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 3.3 million homes.
The final delivery advances the project’s onshore electrical infrastructure and highlights the importance of transformer procurement and delivery planning for major renewable energy developments.
