ESB Networks Doubles Capacity at Pallas 38 kV Substation
ESB Networks is upgrading the Pallas 38 kV substation in Portlaoise, Ireland, replacing two 5 MVA transformers with two 10 MVA transformers, doubling installed transformer capacity.
The first unit is installed and scheduled for energization at the end of October, with the second expected online within 12 weeks. Once commissioned, the upgrade will add 10 MVA of capacity, equivalent to approximately 2,500 homes.
The project forms part of ESB Networks’ Price Review 6 (PR6) investment program for 2026–2030. Ireland’s regulator has approved €11.4 billion for ESB Networks under the baseline PR6 framework, including €8.9 billion in capital expenditure. The wider program includes new and upgraded substations and reinforcement of transmission and distribution infrastructure.
In Laois, ESB Networks has also uprated two transformers at the Portlaoise 110 kV substation from 31.5 MVA to 63 MVA and energized a new 110 kV substation at Bracklone.
