Over the course of the year, I have had the benefit of interviewing leaders within the power industry, including transformer OEM’s, testing, and maintenance providers. The long lead times of transformers, despite new plant additions and maximized production of new transformers, make the testing and maintenance of our installed base, extremely crucial aspects of ensuring the reliability and efficiency of electrical systems.
Since transformers play a vital role in power distribution, stepping up or stepping down voltage levels to meet the requirements of various electrical devices, without proper testing and maintenance, transformers can experience issues such as overheating, insulation breakdown, and power loss, leading to costly downtime and potential safety hazards.

There are several methods for testing power transformers, including insulation resistance testing, turns ratio testing, power factor testing, and sweep frequency response analysis. Insulation resistance testing measures the resistance of the insulation material to ensure it is not degraded.
Turns ratio testing checks the ratio of the number of turns in the primary and secondary windings to ensure proper voltage transformation. Power factor testing measures the efficiency of the transformer in converting electrical power. Sweep frequency response analysis tests the frequency response of the transformer to detect any abnormalities.
And, of course, periodic oil testing with a certified transformer testing lab provides a great indication of the health of the transformer. These methods, when used together, can provide a comprehensive assessment of the transformer’s condition.
