Antigonish Energizes Substation with Two 30/40 MVA Units
Canada – Antigonish Electric Utility energized a new substation in Nova Scotia on October 16, equipped with two fully redundant 30/40 MVA power transformers.
The facility connects to Nova Scotia Power's 138 kV transmission network and supports a planned transition to 25 kV distribution. Its transformers can operate independently or together to accommodate higher demand and improve electricity reliability.
The substation forms part of a $13.8 million (CAD 19.4 million) grid modernization programme, funded equally by the municipality and Canada's Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program.
Additional work includes distribution circuit upgrades, replacement pole-mounted transformers and smart-meter deployment planned for 2027–2028. Approximately 4,000 smart meters will serve homes and businesses.
The programme is scheduled for completion by March 2029.
Nearby customers are expected to connect before winter, with other areas transitioning subsequently. The utility reports approximately 64% renewable electricity and targets 80% by 2030.
