National Grid Plans Britain’s Biggest Substation
National Grid has agreed to purchase more than 70 acres at Dorman Point in Teesside, paving the way for what is expected to become Britain's largest electricity substation, Sky News reported on November 1.
National Grid Electricity Transmission signed the agreement last week with Teesworks, the public-private partnership that owns the site. The company plans to develop a large substation to supply a neighbouring data center that sources say could become Europe's largest. The project remains at an early stage, with the developer, substation capacity, investment value and construction schedule yet to be disclosed.
The development follows growing investment in dedicated power infrastructure for data centers, including Caverion's 70 MW substation for Nebius in Finland and National Grid's Didcot substation upgrade.
A technology industry source told Sky News: "Sovereign AI in the UK requires UK-based infrastructure." Competition for the Teesside site is expected to lead to the selection of a preferred development partner in the coming months.
