Hornsea 3’s Second 2.9-GW HVDC Converter Station Installed
The second HVDC converter station for Ørsted’s 2.9-GW Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm has been installed in the UK, completing the project’s two offshore converter stations.
The stations were built by Aibel, Hitachi Energy and their subcontractors, with high-voltage equipment assembled and commissioned in Haugesund, Norway. The converter stations will form a key part of Hornsea 3’s electrical transmission system, converting power for transmission from the offshore wind farm to the UK grid.
Heerema Marine Contractors installed the second station using its semi-submersible crane vessel Sleipnir, following installation of the first station in March 2026.
The converter station jackets were designed and fabricated by Heerema Fabrication Group in Vlissingen, Netherlands. The topsides were constructed in Map Ta Phut, Thailand, before being transported more than 13,000 nautical miles to Haugesund for high-voltage equipment installation and commissioning.
