Lithuania’s Gižai Substation Adds $54.7 Million in Security Measures
Lithuania is developing the Gižai substation near Kaliningrad as part of the Harmony Link electricity connection with Poland. Covering about 35 hectares, the facility is expected to become Lithuania’s largest transformer substation.
The site is being designed with enhanced protection against physical and hybrid threats, including explosive drones and vehicle attacks. Planned measures include reinforced transformer enclosures, vehicle-resistant barriers, tunnel detection systems and duplicated equipment to maintain operations if individual components are damaged. Lithuania’s armed forces are advising grid operator Litgrid on the security measures.
The additional protection has increased the project’s expected cost by at least $54.7M (€48M). Lithuanian Energy Minister Lukas Savickas said Lithuania plans to ask the European Union to cover at least half of the additional cost.
Harmony Link will provide a 700 MW, 220 kV connection between Lithuania and Poland, creating a second synchronous electricity link between the Baltic states and continental Europe.
