Fourth Transformer Delivered to Collie BESS in Key Project Milestone
Mammoet and AAW Project Logistics have successfully transported and installed a 153-tonne transformer at the Collie Battery Energy Storage System (CBESS) site in Western Australia. The delivery was completed using a 12-line Scheuerle WCW4 trailer and supported by three heavy-duty block trucks. Installation was carried out using Mammoet's 200-tonne Lift 'N' Lock system. This marks the fourth transformer placed on site by the two teams as part of stage two works.
When complete, CBESS will have a total storage capacity of 560 megawatts (MW) / 2,240 megawatt-hours (MWh), making it one of the largest battery energy storage systems under development globally. Located near the town of Collie, the project is owned by Synergy and is being delivered in stages. The second stage--currently under construction--is being developed by Neoen and will feature Tesla Megapack 2 XL battery units. Civil and electrical works are being undertaken by SCEE Electrical.
The battery is intended to support Western Australia's electricity grid as coal-fired power is phased out, providing large-scale storage to help balance renewable generation and evening demand.
