TCN Expands Power Grid with New Transformer Capacity

20 Jun 2025
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the addition of 5,910 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of transformer capacity to the national electricity grid, significantly bolstering Nigeria's transmission infrastructure.

According to Aminu Tahir, General Manager, Project Coordination, and Technical Assistant to the MD/CEO of TCN, the expansion comes through various projects managed by the company's Project Management Unit (PMU). These initiatives are funded by international development partners, including the World Bank, Agence Française de Développement (AFD), and the African Development Bank (AFDB). Procurement for further projects under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is also nearing completion.

Tahir noted that while several projects are already completed, others are over 80% finished, with the cumulative transformer capacity enhancement standing at 5,910 MVA.

In a separate update, Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs at TCN, confirmed the full restoration of bulk power nationwide via the Kainji-Birnin Kebbi 330kV Transmission Line, which resumed operation at 12:40 PM on Wednesday. This follows the emergency reconstruction of six collapsed transmission towers caused by two windstorms in Kebbi State.

The company deployed multiple contractors working round the clock to ensure quick restoration, reiterating its commitment to delivering stable and efficient electricity transmission across Nigeria.
