Victoria General Hospital to replace 1967 transformers
Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is planning to replace two power transformers installed in 1967. The units are original to the hospital and their technical ratings, manufacturers and specifications have not been disclosed.
The replacement project follows the failure of one transformer in March. The incident left the Centennial building without power and phone service for hours, while some operating rooms remained closed for nearly a week. A spare transformer was installed, but Nova Scotia Health said both original units would be permanently replaced.
The health authority is completing the electrical design for the new equipment. “Large electrical transformers are typically custom-manufactured to meet the specific requirements of the facility,” a spokesperson said.
Once ordered, the replacement transformers could take up to 18 months to deliver. No cost estimate has been provided. The hospital’s future remains uncertain, with services expected to move to the Halifax Infirmary expansion in 2031.
