Nigeria Brightens Energy Outlook with Siemens’ Power Transformers

25 Mar 2024

The Nigerian Federal Government has initiated the deployment of 10 power transformers and 10 mobile substations from Siemens Energy under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI). This move comes as a beacon of hope for a nation grappling with chronic electricity shortages and underscores the government's commitment to addressing longstanding challenges within the power sector.

Accompanied by Mr. Kenny Anuwe, MD/CEO of FGN Power Company, Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, inspected the mobile substations at the NEMSA facilities in Lagos. These substations are slated for deployment at crucial brownfield sites, strategically chosen to bolster transmission capacity and alleviate constraints within the network.

The deployment of these power transformers and mobile substations is poised to inject an additional 1300MW into Nigeria's transmission sector, marking a significant leap towards meeting the country's burgeoning energy demands. Notable sites earmarked for this infrastructure upgrade include Okene, Amukpe, Potiskum, Apo, Ihovbor, Birnin Kebbi, Ajah, Nike Lake, Kwanar Dangora, Maryland, Omouaran, and Ojo.

Minister Adelabu emphasized the versatility of mobile substations in addressing various power supply challenges, including major load centers, maintenance downtime, and emergency situations. These substations not only contribute to uninterrupted service delivery but also offer swift responses to fluctuating power demands, ensuring reliability across the grid.

The deployment of Siemens' power transformers and mobile substations signifies a pivotal milestone in Nigeria's quest for a robust and sustainable power infrastructure. With the PPI forging ahead, the government remains resolute in its commitment to transforming the nation's power sector, promising a brighter and more electrified future for all Nigerians.
