The 500kV Shangdang Substation in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu, has successfully completed the upgrade of its No. 1 main transformer, marking a significant milestone in enhancing regional power reliability. The upgrade, completed on December 16, 2024, increases the transformer's capacity from 750 MVA to 1000 MVA, adding 250 MVA of supply capacity to the western region of Zhenjiang.

This six-month project, conducted under the principle of "removing the old before installing the new," was executed in phases aligned with a power outage plan. The additional capacity is expected to meet the electricity needs of 3.3 million households for an entire year, bolstering the grid's stability for the upcoming winter and spring seasons.

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the National Energy Administration (NEA) have emphasized the importance of such projects in their "Large-Scale Equipment Upgrade Plan for Key Energy Fields." The plan calls for modernizing power transmission and distribution infrastructure to support the construction of a new energy system in China.

The Shangdang Substation, operational for 29 years, serves as a critical hub for transmitting electricity from the north and west to the south and east of China. This upgrade underscores the country's commitment to strengthening its power infrastructure and ensuring long-term energy security.
