Xcel Energy completes $5.2m transformer upgrade at southwest Amarillo substation

10 Jun 2019

AMARILLO, Texas -- Xcel Energy has completed upgrades to a key electrical substation in southwest Amarillo, which included addition of a new power transformer.

The Hillside Substation, built in 2012 to ease the strain on nearby substations, has been upgraded with an additional transformer to increase the capacity and reliability of electricity supply in the area and prevent overloaded lines when temperatures soar in the summer, reports abc7.

Total investment on the additional Hillside transformer was about $5.2 million.

"We're seeing growth all across the city, but nowhere has it grown faster than in southwest Amarillo," said David Hudson, president of Xcel Energy - Texas. "When substations and lines reach capacity, we tend to see more reliability issues and have fewer options to route power from another direction in the event of damage to these facilities. By expanding the Hillside substation, we can reduce the strain on a wide section of our power grid and keep the power flowing, even on the hottest days."
