World’s highest transmission project starts construction in Tibet

19 Sep 2019

TIBET - The world's highest electricity transmission project that will stretch across 1,050 miles (1,689 kilometers) from Xigaze City to Ali Prefecture started construction in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

With transmission towers at an average elevation of over 13,123 feet (4,000 meters), the project is said to be extremely difficult due to the harsh construction environment, dangerous road conditions, poor logistics support and strict environmental protection requirements.

The transmission line requires a total investment of $1.05 billion. It is planned to be completed in 2021 and expected to benefit nearly 380,000 people.

The project will connect 10 Tibetan counties providing the power grid infrastructure that is necessary to connect Ali Prefecture to the rest of Tibet.
