Wilson Power Transformers Power Up the Port of Southampton’s Infrastructure

4 Apr 2025
The Port of Southampton, the second-largest container terminal in the UK, has recently completed a significant infrastructure upgrade to ensure its continued operational efficiency. As part of ongoing enhancements, Associated British Ports has installed new power transformers to support critical operations at the port.

Among the new installations are two Wilson Power Transformers with ratings of 33/11-6.6kV and 12/24MVA, which will provide a vital power supply to the port. Additionally, a Wilson e3 Ultra Low Loss Amorphous® Transformer (1000kVA, 11000-6600/433V) has been added as an auxiliary transformer.

These transformers have been commissioned by Southern Voltage Services and SHARRD ENERGY SERVICES Ltd., ensuring a reliable power system for the growing port infrastructure.

The Port of Southampton handles over 1.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) and 900,000 vehicles annually, along with processing £40 billion of UK exports and welcoming 2 million cruise passengers. This upgrade is crucial to maintaining the port's role in global trade and logistics.

This installation marks a significant step in reinforcing the power infrastructure that underpins the port's operations, ensuring that it remains a key player in the UK's transport and logistics sector.
