Westrafo to Establish First US Transformer Plant in Ohio

16 Jul 2024

Italy-based Westrafo will construct its first North American facility in Trotwood, Ohio, dedicated to manufacturing medium- and high-voltage transformers and energy solutions systems. Announced on June 24, the project entails an investment ranging from $12 million to $15 million and is expected to create 230 jobs. The 231,000-square-foot plant is set to commence production in July 2025, with an annual output capacity of 12 GW starting in 2027.

Westrafo, known for its wide range of applications including photovoltaic, wind, hydrogen, and energy storage, has been exporting to the U.S. since 2019 and boasts over 7 GW of installed capacity in the country. The Trotwood facility will expand the company's global footprint, which already includes production sites in Vicenza, Italy, and Tema, Ghana.

This expansion aligns with the growing demand for transformers in the U.S., driven by increased electricity consumption, infrastructural development, and renewable energy investments. Alberto Cracco, CEO of Westrafo, highlighted the industry's challenges, including labor and material shortages affecting production timelines.

The project's viability depends on state and local incentives, with the Ohio Tax Credit Authority already approving a 1.778%, 10-year job creation tax credit. Ohio is a significant player in renewable energy manufacturing, ranking among the top 10 U.S. states for clean energy investments.
