Westrafo S.P.A. Supplies Eight FR3r™ Transformers for German BESS Facility
Westrafo S.P.A. has delivered eight FR3r™ fluid-immersed hermetic-type transformers for a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Germany, following the successful completion of factory acceptance tests (FAT).
Each transformer has a rated capacity of 4,200 kVA and is designed in compliance with EcoT2 standards. The units operate at 30±2x2.5% / 2x0.73 kV, vector group Dd0d0, at 50 Hz, with KNAN cooling configuration.
The transformers are filled with FR3r™ fluid, a renewable natural ester dielectric fluid produced by Cargill Bioindustrial. Derived from more than 99% rapeseed oil, the fluid serves as an alternative to mineral oil and is classified as readily biodegradable under OECD 301 B standards.
Natural ester-based transformer solutions are increasingly deployed in energy infrastructure projects due to their higher fire point, environmental profile and operational performance characteristics. The hermetic-type design further enhances reliability by limiting exposure to air and moisture.
The delivery supports the development of battery energy storage infrastructure in Germany, where grid flexibility and renewable energy integration remain strategic priorities.
The project highlights the continued alignment of advanced transformer engineering with evolving sustainability requirements in the European energy sector.
