WEG to Supply Grid Stabilization System for Northern Chile with Alupar
WEG has signed contracts to deliver a large-scale grid stabilization system in northern Chile, as part of a project led by Brazilian transmission company Alupar. The deal includes the supply of the largest synchronous condensers ever produced by WEG, along with step-up transformers, control and protection systems, and commissioning services.
The systems will be installed at the Ana Maria and Illapa substations, located in the Antofagasta and Atacama regions. The project is designed to strengthen Chile's national grid by increasing short-circuit capacity--a key factor in grid reliability and stability. Delivery and installation are expected to be completed by October 2026.
João Paulo Gualberto da Silva, Managing Director of Energy at WEG, stated, "We are consolidating our position as one of the main global suppliers of energy solutions with this project. The partnership with Alupar strengthens our collaboration and paves the way for future similar projects in the region."
The initiative forms part of two lots awarded to Alupar in 2024 by the Chilean government, aimed at enhancing transmission system resilience in response to growing renewable energy integration.
For WEG, this marks a strategic expansion into complete stabilization systems in Latin America and reinforces its footprint in high-voltage infrastructure development across the region.
