WEG supplies power transformer for Copel’s transmission system reinforcement project

25 May 2021
BRAZIL -- Copel put into operation the second 225 MVA transformer in the Ponta Grossa Sul substation, concluding a power transmission system reinforcement project in the central region of Paraná.

The Ponta Grossa Sul substation operates at 230 kV and had the first 225 MVA transformer energized in March this year. With the second unit in operation, the transformation capacity in this substation goes from 125 MVA to 450 MVA.
The project was completed three months before the deadline established by the Agency National Electricity Regulatory Agency (Aneel).
The work received resources of approximately $4.5 million.
"It is a very significant investment, as we have tripled the capacity for energy transformation at this point in the system, preparing the electricity grid for a significant growth in demand in the Ponta Grossa region over the next few years", highlights the General Director of Generation and Transmission from Copel, Moacir Carlos Bertol.
The two units at the Sul substation are the first three-phase transformers of this size that Copel put into operation in Paraná and are among the largest in Brazil.
Similar equipment will be installed at the Pato Branco substations by the end of 2021, and in Guaíra in 2022, adding up to another $12.4 million in investments.
