WEG Strengthens Brazil’s Grid with 525 kV Transformer Installation
WEG has supplied three single-phase 500 MVA transformers at 525 kV for the Assis Substation in Brazil, marking the country’s first underground transmission system at this voltage level. The transformers, totaling 1.5 GVA of capacity, were delivered in partnership with TAESA – Transmissora Aliança de Energia Elétrica S.A.
Manufactured at WEG’s Betim plant in Minas Gerais, each transformer weighs approximately 300 tons and was transported 800 km to the installation site in Assis, São Paulo. The transformers form part of the substation’s second transformation bank and adapt the voltage from 440 kV to 525 kV, enhancing the reliability and stability of one of the most important corridors of the Sistema Interligado Nacional (SIN).
The project involved coordination between WEG and TAESA across project development, manufacturing, logistics, and commissioning. The added transformation capacity supports grid stability, benefits major consumption centers, and contributes to the robustness of Brazil’s electrical system.
This delivery represents a significant milestone in high-voltage engineering and demonstrates WEG’s expertise in large-scale transformer solutions. The collaboration with TAESA highlights the role of partnerships between industrial suppliers and the power sector in enabling critical infrastructure.
