WEG S.A. Unleashes $245 million Investment to Supercharge Transformer Production Across Americas

8 Dec 2023
WEG S.A., a global leader in electrical equipment manufacturing, has unveiled a groundbreaking plan to invest $245 million (R$ 1,2 billion) in expanding its transformer production capacity across key markets in Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia. Over the next three years, the company aims to increase its production capacity by an impressive 50%, reinforcing its commitment to meet the rising demand for power transformers.
In Brazil, the investments will focus on the Betim and Itajubá industrial sites in the state of Minas Gerais. The Betim facility will undergo significant expansion, including the construction of a new factory dedicated to radiator production, while the Itajubá site will see its current production capacity doubled. These strategic moves, backed by an investment of $50 million (R$200 million) and $17 million(R$83 million), respectively, showcase WEG's dedication to enhancing its market presence and facilitating increased exports.
Mexico is set to witness a transformative development as WEG commits approximately $156 million (R$765 million) to establish a new power transformer factory in Atotonilco de Tula. This investment, aimed at serving the North American transmission market up to 550 kV, aligns with the company's strategy to address the growing demand for power transformers in the region.
In Colombia, WEG plans to bolster local production with the construction of a new transformer factory in Rionegro, State of Antioquia. With an investment of approximately $39 million (R$190 million), this initiative not only caters to the oil sector's demand but also supports the expansion and modernization of energy infrastructure in neighboring markets such as Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Central America.
The ambitious investment schedule anticipates the completion of these transformative projects by December 2026, designed to facilitate a gradual and continuous increase in production capacity, meeting WEG's expansion needs in the years to come.
