WEG Pioneers Digital Substations, Making Energy Transmission Faster and Safer

20 Mar 2024

In a recent development, WEG has successfully carried out the energization of a digital substation for energy transmission, marking a significant advancement in the electrical sector. The Vilhena Substation 230/138/69/13.8kV is the first digital substation energized and manufactured by WEG within an Energy Transmission system.

This project underscores the implementation of cutting-edge technology, with the use of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) and Merging Units (MUs), compliant with the IEC 61850 standard. Merging Unit is, in other words, data acquisition unit for digitizing analog signals from current transformers, potential transformers, and binary signals from equipment in the yard.

The integration of digital solutions in the Substation Protection and Control Systems (SPCS) has streamlined processes, replacing traditional command and control cables with optical fiber cables. This not only reduces implementation and commissioning time but also enhances operational efficiency. Moreover, the deployment of redundancy protocols ensures robustness and reliability in operation, in line with international standards such as IEC-62439.

WEG's commitment to innovation extends beyond hardware to comprehensive testing and certification processes. Rigorous tests, including factory acceptance tests (TAF) and signal avalanche tests, are conducted to guarantee the correct operation of the process bus. With proprietary technology and a network monitoring system, WEG provides state-of-the-art solutions, contributing to the enhancement of the National Interconnected System (SIN) and various other sectors including generation, distribution, industrial, mobile, and skid substations.
