WEG Delivers Transformer Package for Recife Grid Expansion
WEG has played a key role in a major modernization project at the Bongi Substation in Recife, Brazil, supporting a significant reinforcement of the metropolitan region’s power transmission infrastructure.
The project formed part of a transmission network reinforcement plan authorized by ANEEL and involved a full upgrade of substation systems to increase reliability, operational flexibility, and installed capacity.
As part of the expansion, the substation’s transformation capacity was increased from 400 MVA to 900 MVA, marking a substantial boost to the region’s electricity supply capability. The modernization also included upgrades to 230 kV and 69 kV busbars, replacement of switching equipment, improved electrical connections, and expansion of core infrastructure.
WEG was responsible for multiple phases of the project, including the manufacturing, supply, assembly, and energization of key transformer assets. This included two 200 MVA 230/69 kV transformers and two additional 200 MVA 230/69 kV/13.8 kV transformers, which formed the backbone of the upgraded transmission capacity.
In addition to transformer delivery, WEG supplied a broad range of high-voltage equipment and systems such as circuit breakers, disconnect switches, surge arresters, current and voltage transformers, and hybrid busbar modules. The company also supported protection, control, and supervision systems, as well as commissioning and energization services.
The project reflects a broader effort to strengthen grid resilience in the Recife metropolitan area, improving operational security and supporting future demand growth in line with Brazil’s transmission expansion strategy.
