WEG Completes Full Modernization of Colombia’s Altagracia Substation
WEG has completed a large-scale modernization project at the Altagracia Substation in Colombia, supporting improved service quality and boosting electrical capacity for more than 25,000 users, with potential expansion to 50,000–60,000 consumers in the future.
The project, executed for Empresa de Energía de Pereira S.A. ESP, included the full supply of equipment—excluding civil works—as well as installation, integration, programming, testing, and commissioning. The substation, operating at 33/13.8 kV, was officially delivered on April 15.
WEG’s scope covered a broad portfolio of solutions, including AIS primary switchgear, protection and control switchgear, AC and DC auxiliary systems, automation panels, communication racks, arc detectors, a pad-mounted transformer, battery bank, generator set, fire-fighting system, and full internal and external lighting and cabling infrastructure. The company also integrated the complete control and supervision system, enabling secure remote operation.
A key upgrade was the installation of a new 12.5 MVA transformer, designed to strengthen reliability and reduce service interruptions. The enhanced substation also improves interconnection between Morelia, La Estrella, and Palmilla, reinforcing regional grid stability.
For WEG, the modernization marks its largest project to date carried out by its Automation Services and Digital & Systems unit in Colombia, expanding its footprint in the Utilities segment. For the utility, the project enhances distribution capacity, boosts performance indicators before CREG, and lays a more solid foundation for future commercial growth.
