Virtus Data Centres Installs Super-grid Transformers at Wustermark Campus

2 Jun 2026
Virtus Data Centres has completed the installation of two 185MVA super-grid transformers at its Wustermark Campus in Berlin/Brandenburg, Germany. The transformers, among the largest ever deployed at a European data center, enable the campus to connect to the 380kV transmission network for the first time.

The transformers will support power delivery to the campus, which is initially planned for 300MW and is expected to scale over time. Energy will be supplied via a 500MW substation with dual direct connections to the 50Hertz 380kV grid. Virtus stated that these high-voltage connections are designed to provide stable and resilient power infrastructure.

The site is intended to operate on 100% renewable energy, leveraging nearby onshore wind capacity. Mike Golding, SVP of Construction at Virtus, commented: “Delivering the Wustermark Campus has been one of the most ambitious engineering programs Virtus has undertaken to date. From the 380kV connections to the deployment of these super-grid transformers, every element has been designed to deliver levels of resilience and scalability that have not previously been available in this region.”

Golding added: “This campus represents a new generation of infrastructure – one that supports AI-scale growth, reduces reliance on generators, and aligns with the future of renewable energy. We are incredibly proud of what our teams and partners have achieved, and this is only the beginning of our long-term commitment to the Berlin-Brandenburg region.”

Construction began last month on the 3.7 million sq ft (350,000 sqm) campus, which will include nine data centers. Waste heat from the facilities is planned to support district heating in nearby Havelland and Potsdam regions. All units will feature high-density rack support and closed-loop chilled water cooling systems to accommodate high-performance computing and AI workloads.

Virtus, headquartered in the UK, currently operates four data center campuses in the Greater London area, with additional sites planned in Buckinghamshire and Milan.
