UK Power Networks Upgrades Wingham’s Power Supply with New Transformers

16 Dec 2024
UK Power Networks, the company responsible for distributing electricity across Kent, has installed two new 41-tonne electricity transformers in Wingham. This upgrade forms part of the company's £800 million ($1 billion) investment program for 2024, aimed at maintaining reliable power supply for communities.

The new transformers are designed to receive electricity at 33,000 volts, reducing it safely to 11,000 volts for distribution to substations. This process ensures over 7,000 homes and businesses in the area have a steady and reliable power supply.

Stephen Mortimer, Project Manager at UK Power Networks, stated: "This investment project will deliver long-lasting benefits in the Wingham area. It will increase the resilience of the network for residents across a wide area and support growth in demand, including more low carbon technologies as they connect to our electricity networks."

The transformers replaced in this scheme have been refurbished by specialists and repurposed, aligning with the company's environmental sustainability objectives.

UK Power Networks serves approximately 20 million people across the South East, London, and East of England, managing a network of cables, substations, and power lines.
