UK Firm Supplies Bespoke Transformer to Hinkley Point C
Electro-Wind Ltd has manufactured and supplied a custom-built transformer for the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, one of the UK's most significant infrastructure projects.
The 500kVA 3PH 415V/690V transformer, rated to IP55 for external use, was developed in partnership with a leading electrical wholesaler. It has been installed on a raised platform and is currently providing temporary power to the Unit 2 reactor polar crane during the commissioning phase.
One of the project's main challenges was achieving the IP55 protection rating while keeping the unit's size and weight to a minimum. According to Electro-Wind Ltd, its engineering team addressed this by incorporating forced air cooling, ensuring the transformer complied with environmental standards without compromising efficiency.
The transformer now supports one of the largest land-based cranes in the world. Despite tight deadlines, Electro-Wind Ltd completed the design, manufacture, and delivery within eight weeks, meeting all technical requirements.
The project underscores the company's role as a UK-based manufacturer of bespoke transformer solutions for complex and time-critical applications.
