UAE Utility SEWA Upgrades Transformers During Maintenance of 200 Substations
The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) completed a major maintenance programme in 2025, focusing on over 200 transmission and distribution substations and high-voltage transformers to improve network reliability and efficiency.
Eng. Hamad Al Tunaiji, Director of the Power Transmission Department, said SEWA continues to strengthen the network through preventive maintenance and technical upgrades, following international best practices and directives from His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.
The programme covered 144 stations operating at 132 kV and 33 kV. Key works included:
-
Upgrading protection systems with 45 advanced relays
-
Renewing transformer oil in 23 units
-
Conducting safety inspections and analyses for 45 transformers at 132 kV
-
Restoring battery efficiency in 40 substations
-
Replacing under-load voltage regulators in 24 transformers
A new 220 kV dynamic transformer was commissioned at Al Tai station, enhancing voltage quality and stabilising the network. SEWA also converted overhead lines connecting Al Tai and Industrial Area 17 stations to underground cables, further reducing environmental outage risks.
All transformer and substation upgrades were performed by SEWA’s engineers and technicians, reinforcing the authority’s commitment to reliable and efficient electricity transmission across the emirate.
