Two Transformers Delivered for Celtic Interconnector in Ireland
EirGrid has confirmed the delivery of two of the four transformers required for the Celtic Interconnector, a high-capacity electricity link between Ireland and France. The transformers were transported from Austria via Rotterdam to the converter station site in Ballyadam, southern Ireland.
The interconnector, jointly developed by EirGrid and Réseau de Transport d'Électricité (RTE), will carry up to 700 MW of electricity, enough to power approximately 450,000 homes. Once complete, it will represent the first direct electricity connection between Ireland and continental Europe.
A spokesperson for EirGrid highlighted the logistical complexity of transporting the large-scale equipment and praised the coordination between contractors, site teams, and local authorities.
The Celtic Interconnector forms part of broader efforts to integrate renewable energy into European grids, including offshore wind, and to enhance energy security across the region.
The remaining two transformers are expected to be delivered in the coming months, moving the project closer to operational readiness.
