Trio of Transmission Lines Fast-Tracked to Power Algoma Steel’s Green Transition

24 Oct 2023

Ontario's Energy Minister, Todd Smith, announced the acceleration of three crucial transmission line projects during a visit to Sault Ste. Marie. Developed by Hydro One, these projects play a vital role in powering Algoma Steel's transition to electric arc furnace steelmaking and supporting various other essential developments, all with the crucial involvement of power transformers.

Smith emphasized the need for a solid plan for Ontario's clean energy future as the province continues to grow, welcoming more residents. He pointed out that a transmission buildout, bolstered by robust power transformers, is essential to ensure the efficient delivery of electricity to homes and businesses.

Two of these lines, running between Sault and Sudbury, are particularly critical for Algoma Steel's transition. They will not only support Algoma Steel but also facilitate additional load connections in the Sault Ste. Marie region and increase transfer capacity into northwestern Ontario. These transmission lines, combined with the strength of power transformers, are expected to be operational in 2029, coinciding with Algoma Steel's complete shift to electric arc steelmaking.

The forward-thinking investment in these transmission lines and power transformers is a significant step toward decarbonizing local industries and enabling future job-creating investments. Furthermore, the province has introduced an equity partnership model, allowing First Nations to invest in a 50% equity stake in the transmission line component once completed. This initiative fosters economic and partnership opportunities for Indigenous communities, contributing to reconciliation efforts.

Mayor Matthew Shoemaker emphasized the importance of securing increased power and energy access for the city, particularly in light of other ongoing energy projects. These efforts ensure a steady and reliable power supply, benefitting Algoma Steel's green steel production and the local community.

The acceleration of these transmission line projects, supported by the strength of power transformers, reflects Ontario's commitment to clean energy, economic growth, and collaboration with Indigenous communities to create a sustainable and prosperous future.
