Transmission grid modernization underway in eastern Finland

19 Mar 2021
FINLAND -- The transmission system operator Fingrid is modernizing the old electricity transmission network in North Karelia.

Fingrid is investing approximately $3.6 million in network reinforcements in North Karelia.
Three transmission grid modernization projects have been underway in the eastern region of Finland over the period between 2019 and 2022.
The first contract, completed in October 2019, covered the upgrade of the transmission line between Uimaharju and Pamilo.
The modernization of the transmission line between Kontiolahti and Uimaharju was commissioned at the start of March 2021. Due to circumstances related to the COVID-19 situation, the project couldn't be completed by the end of 2020 as originally planned.
The current project involves modernizing approximately 70 miles of 110 kV power lines, upgrading two substations and building a new substation in Palojärvi. The completion of the construction works is expected in summer 2022.
TMV Line is the contractor for all the transmission line contracts. Caverion Suomi is the contractor for the Uimaharju substation, and TMV Service for the Kontiolahti and Palojärvi substations.
The grid upgrades are expected to significantly improve transmission reliability in the region.
