Transformer Issue Delays Gas Turbine in San Pedro

13 Sep 2024
The San Pedro Gas Turbine has been successfully commissioned, marking a significant step toward stabilizing energy supply for Belize Electricity Limited (BEL). According to a recent update from BEL, the gas turbine has met performance expectations and is ready for activation should the submarine cables on the island fail. However, operations have been delayed once again due to issues with one of the three transformers.

This marks the second transformer failure in the system, which was flagged by BEL's monitoring system early on Saturday morning. As a result, the turbine will not be fully functional until the end of the year. The delay is further compounded by logistical issues stemming from Hurricane Beryl, which diverted the shipment of the new transformer, leaving it stranded in Jamaica for several weeks.

Despite the setback, BEL reassured the public that it continues to monitor the island's power demand and is ready to implement contingency measures to protect the submarine cable interconnection if necessary. The company is working closely with consultants to expedite repairs and maintain power reliability.
