Transformer Fire Breaks Out at Pepco Plant in Northeast D.C.

11 Sep 2025
A transformer fire broke out Wednesday afternoon at a Pepco facility in Northeast Washington, D.C., prompting an emergency response but no reported injuries.

According to D.C. Fire and EMS, crews were dispatched at approximately 3:15 p.m. to the Pepco Benning Service Center on the 3400 block of Benning Road, NE. Fire officials confirmed the immediate area of the fire was de-energized, and an adjacent building was evacuated as a precaution.

Foam units and Hazmat teams remained on scene overnight to monitor conditions and ensure safety. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the incident.

In a statement, Pepco confirmed that the fire was contained and that emergency personnel were coordinating with company crews. "There are currently no outages related to this event, but as the situation changes there may be a need for emergent outages in the area," the company said.

Authorities emphasized that the incident is under investigation, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
