Transformer Failure Disrupts Grand Canyon North Rim Operations

6 Jun 2025
A power outage caused by a transformer failure has brought most visitor services at the Grand Canyon North Rim to a halt, according to the National Park Service (NPS).

The outage began Sunday night, with officials confirming the cause on Wednesday. Affected facilities include the Grand Canyon Lodge, the only hotel located within the North Rim of the national park, which began canceling overnight reservations on Monday.

The outage is also impacting the North Rim General Store, fuel station, campground showers and laundry, the North Rim Campground, employee housing, and various administrative areas.

There is currently no official timeline for restoring power or resuming full operations. Park officials have not announced alternative arrangements or visitor advisories beyond the service disruption notice.

The North Rim, less frequented than the South Rim, typically operates seasonally and draws visitors looking for a quieter Grand Canyon experience. The timing of the outage, during peak tourist season, could significantly affect visitor plans and local tourism activity.
