Transformer Deliveries Near Completion at Overton Substation
The Yorkshire GREEN project, part of National Grid's Great Grid Upgrade, marked another major milestone this weekend with the delivery of the second-to-last supergrid transformer to the Overton substation.
A total of eight supergrid transformers are scheduled for installation across the Overton and Monk Fryston substations. The units are being supplied by global manufacturers Hyundai and Hyosung, and are vital to the UK's electricity infrastructure. These large-scale transformers step voltage up or down, ensuring power is transmitted efficiently from generation sites and safely distributed to homes and businesses.
Each transformer weighs around 200 tonnes, requiring specialised logistics and police-escorted transport due to their size and complexity. The project is delivered by Murphy Power Networks as part of the One Murphy team in collaboration with National Grid.
With this delivery, three of the four transformers for Overton are now on site, with the final unit expected soon. The equipment supports the wider Great Grid Upgrade, a programme designed to modernise the UK's power network and enable the transition to cleaner energy sources.
