Transelectrica has inaugurated a new 400 kV voltage level at the Arefu 220/110 kV transformer station, enhancing the stability and operational safety of Romania's electricity transmission network. The investment, valued at over $17.5 million, introduces Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) technology, ensuring high reliability and security.

The 400/220/110 kV Arefu station plays a crucial role in evacuating electricity from hydroelectric plants, particularly the Vidraru Hydroelectric Power Plant, while also securing power supply for consumers in Argeș and Vâlcea counties. Additionally, it supports the integration of renewable energy sources into the national grid.

The project, carried out by SIEMENS ENERGY SRL, ELECTROMONTAJ CARPAȚI S.A., and ELECTROMONTAJ S.A., was completed between January 2023 and December 2024. A key upgrade involved installing a 400 MVA, 400/220 kV autotransformer, creating a second connection between the Argeș-Vâlcea network and the 400 kV transmission system, significantly improving system stability.

Previously, the region depended solely on the Bradu 400/220/110/20 kV station, connected through a 220 kV ring. The Arefu station now provides an additional link, reducing vulnerabilities and enhancing operational efficiency.

Transelectrica continues to focus on strategic investments, with its 2024-2033 Development Plan allocating $612 million for re-engineering and modernizing Romania's Electric Transmission Network (RET), as part of a broader $1.9 billion initiative.
