Transelectrica Advances Energy Infrastructure with Stâlpu Station Upgrade

31 Jan 2025
Transelectrica, Romania's national electricity transmission company, has commenced work on the 400 kV Stâlpu Station and the modernization of the 110 kV and medium voltage cells at the existing Stâlpu facility. The investment, valued at approximately $19 million, is expected to be completed by January 2027.

According to Ștefăniță Munteanu, President of the Directorate, the project is crucial for integrating renewable energy and strengthening the power grid. The new 400 kV station will enhance energy evacuation from renewable sources in southeastern Romania and facilitate the connection of the Cernavodă - Stâlpu Overhead Power Line and the Brazi Vest - Teleajen - Stâlpu axis after their upgrade to 400 kV.

Originally commissioned in 1977, the Stâlpu Transformer Substation is undergoing a significant modernization as part of Transelectrica's 2024-2033 Development Plan, which has an estimated total investment of $1.92 billion. The plan prioritizes upgrading electrical infrastructure, integrating renewable energy, and improving Romania's interconnection capacity.

This project supports the country's long-term energy security and transition to cleaner energy sources while fostering economic growth at both local and national levels.
